Before New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu announced his support for Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign, her endorsement in the early voting-critical state was coveted by numerous Republican candidates.
Sununu, a Republican who has served as governor since 2017, has made it clear that he is seeking to break away from former President Donald Trump while spending time with Republican candidates.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, one of the few Republican candidates prepared to attack Trump, might have seemed like a good choice. But Sununu told the Washington Post that Christie failed to impress him.
Sununu told the Post that Christie, who suspended his campaign earlier this month, was “absolutely obsessed with being president” but had limited messages to voters.
As far as Sununu is concerned, Christie may have gone too far in attacking Trump as well. Sununu said she would support Trump over President Joe Biden even if Haley ended her presidential bid and the former president won the Republican nomination.
Before leaving the race, Christie had support in the low double digits in New Hampshire, which was also the only state in which he had clear support. One reason for this is the influential center-right bloc in the state, which could sway the state’s elections.
And even if Mr. Christie were to win delegates in New Hampshire, he would likely struggle in South Carolina, where Mr. Trump maintained a commanding lead, and in the Super Tuesday contest.
