Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse University aims to bring “preeminent researchers and educators” in artificial intelligence to campus with a $1.5 million gift from IBM Pioneer.
The university announced this week that Kwan G. Tan, a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, received his Ph.D. In 1973, he made an endowment at SU that established the KG Tan Professorship, which focuses on the emerging field of AI. A search to fill the position will be conducted in the fall.
The professors hired will work in the SU College of Engineering and Computer Science.
“This individual will be a leading scholar in the development and rigorous analysis of AI algorithms, while also serving as an attractive instructor for our talented cadre of computer science students,” ECS Dean J. Cole Smith said in a news release. It will play a role.” “We are grateful for (Tan’s) gift, his guidance and his passion for innovation.”
During a career that began after earning a master’s degree from Ohio State University in 1962, Tan earned four patents with IBM and one with Sun Microsystems. He also held leadership positions at Hewlett and his Packard. Tan had been designing computers at IBM for about five years when he applied for a fellowship program and was accepted into the SU electrical engineering doctoral program.
The gift to the AI professorship is the latest of several large gifts Mr. Tan has made to the university. In 2017, he donated his $3.5 million to establish a health, wellness and recreation center at his gym in Archibald. He also donated $5 million to SU’s National Veterans Resource Center in 2019. A scholarship fund has also been established. Tan was born and raised in China and is currently retired in San Diego.
“Syracuse University is grateful to KG for continuing to inspire current and future generations of students,” President Kent Shivreux said in a news release. “His support and generosity will ensure continued academic and research excellence for our students and faculty.”
