Cummins announces $580 million investment plan in Rocky Mount Engine Plant

Nash County, North Carolina — Cummins announced a $580 million project to foster economic and job growth in the Nash County community.

This investment is expected to create approximately 80 new jobs and foster short-term employment opportunities and long-term job security. Additionally, this investment will include the installation of new equipment for future manufacturing and assembly line upgrades for next-generation products.

Plant manager Steve Pinkston said investment was needed.

“It’s going to take a long time,” Pinkston said. “We’ve been here for 40 years.”

The plan was put together after Cummins received approval for tax incentives from Nash County to help move the project forward. An estimated $7 million will be repaid to Cummins between 2026 and 2032.

Nash County Economic Development Director Andy Hagee said this investment is a win for Nash County.

“This is validation that one of our largest employers loves being here, is growing here, making money here and investing here,” Hagee said. Ta.

Cummins Rocky Mount currently employs approximately 2,000 people from throughout Eastern North Carolina.

“This is one of the largest investments Cummins has ever made. This is truly a commitment to location, product, people and region,” Pinkston said.

Nash County’s unemployment rate is 4.3 percent, and Edgecombe County’s unemployment rate is 5.2 percent, according to data from the Carolina Gateway Partnership.

Rocky Mount city leaders said they hope the investment will help close those gaps and draw more people to the area.

“I think it’s a great day every time we create a new job for the residents of Eastern North Carolina, Rocky Mount, and Edgecombe and Nash Counties,” said Rocky Mount City Manager Keith Rogers Jr.

“This investment is about more than just engines. It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to our community and our vision for a sustainable and impactful future,” Pinkston said. “This means RMEP and Cummins are here to stay, and we are proud to be one of the largest employers in the tri-county region.”

The Rocky Mount plant has been in operation since 1983.
