Daly and Osland from the School of Music make their world premiere at the World Saxophone Congress

LEXINGTON, Ky. (February 8, 2024) — Laurie Daly, associate professor of jazz studies and Miles Oslund, professor of saxophone and director of jazz studies at the University of Kentucky School of Music, performed as the Oslund/Daley Duo in the world premiere of Daly’s “Triptych.” This work incorporates both written and improvised parts.

The World Saxophone Congress is a festival that brings together musicians from all over the world. The event is sponsored by the International Saxophone Committee and is held every three years. The three-day conference in the Canary Islands included lectures, master classes and concerts.

Oslund achieved fame as an educator, recording and performance artist, author, arranger, and composer. Oslund has appeared throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia as a guest conductor, performer, and clinician with the Selmer (Paris) Saxophone, Jody Jazz Woodwind Mouthpiece, and D’Addario Woodwind Products. His compositions and arrangements, available through IJazz Music, have been recognized and supported by fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Kentucky Council on the Arts, and numerous other arts foundations.

Sea Breeze Jazz Records, one of jazz’s most respected labels, has submitted nine of his recordings for Grammy nominations, including “Saxacise” and “My Old Kentucky Home.” are doing. His recording for Open Loop Jazz Records, “An Old Speckled Hen at Snapes Malting,” was inspired by his experiences while playing in England. The Osland Saxophone Quartet’s debut recording was hailed by Saxophone Journal as a “great example of the coming century of music” and was featured on NPR’s nationally syndicated classical radio show, Performance Today. Their latest recording is a 2-CD set entitled “Commission Impossible.” A masterpiece compilation of his ten years of music production by OSQ, documenting repertoire written and commissioned for quartets.

Oslund’s three books are available from Dorn Publications, and his scholarly works (including over 75 articles and reviews on saxophone technique and jazz improvisation) have been published in Downbeat, Jazz Educators Journal, and Jazz Player Magazine. , can be found in various publications such as Saxophone. Journal, Selmer Woodwind Notebook, Windplayer Magazine. He has three of his books/CDs published by Warner Bros. “Music by Bob Mintzer,” “Music by Nestor Torres,” and “Music by Eddie Daniels.”

Osland released 42 CD recordings during his 35-year tenure in the UK. His 43rd recording will be released this fall and is titled Collaborations Volume 4: The Music of Raleigh Dailey. This CD contains all of the music Daly has written for Osland.

Laurie Daly is an internationally recognized jazz pianist, composer, scholar, and educator. He studied at Kent State University, University of North Texas, and University of Kentucky. Daly has performed extensively throughout the United States, the Americas, Europe, and Asia. In 2002, he was selected to perform at the 3rd International Marshall Solar Jazz Piano Competition in Paris, France. He is pianist and staff arranger for the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra, as well as pianist and composer for the Osland/Daily Jazztet. The Jazztet recently performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Daly’s works have been performed and recorded by numerous university, military, and professional jazz ensembles. His most recent chamber music works are Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano and Dialogue for Trombone and Piano. He was also the recipient of the Al Smith Composition Fellowship sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council. He has published articles in IAJE Research Papers, The Encyclopedia of Appalachia, Saxophone Journal, Jazz Improv Magazine, Music Reference Services Quarterly, Notes, and Teaching Music Through Performance In Jazz.

In the UK, Daly currently teaches courses in jazz piano, jazz improvisation, and large and small ensembles. Under his direction, the Jazz Ensemble, Lab Band, and Jazz Combo have performed nationally at various jazz festivals, including the International Jazz Education Network Conference. His most recent recordings are “What Happened Next” with the Laurie Daley Trio and “Measure From Zero” with trumpeter Peter Evans, both on his own label, Llama Records. Other upcoming CD releases of his include his recordings as a duo with Rui Li and his CD with his free improvisational ensemble, raleighllama.
