Dave Chappelle called it “one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen.”
Of course, he’s talking about the infamous Oscar showdown between Will Smith and Chris Rock.
Like many people, Chappelle wasn’t sure what he was looking at. He thought it was “fake” and he “waited 30, 40 minutes” before calling Locke to find out what had actually happened.
“I called him on FaceTime and he answered,” Chappelle said. “As soon as I answered the phone, I said, ‘You’re the only one who can answer the phone.’ Apparently, Obama and Oprah and everyone called this ‘N***A’ and everything was okay.” It seems that you have checked whether or not. ”
“And I thought it was fake. I didn’t know,” he continued. “So I asked. I said, ‘Well, you know.’ He said, “What?” I said, “Did it hurt?” He said, “Yes, no, it hurt.” And I knew it was real. And then, for the first time, I got angry. ”
Chappelle said, “Will just sat there and enjoyed the rest of the night. It was crazy. What the hell is this?”
He linked the incident to his own onstage assault at the Hollywood Bowl the same year, in which he was tackled by an audience member running on stage during a performance.
“For a homeless person, there was an incredible amount of seating in this rural area,” Chappelle joked. “Jamie Foxx was her first mother.”**r It was something that jumped out from the crowd. He was wearing a white cowboy hat and looked like he knew this was going to happen to me. ”
He continued, “Every celebrity saw themselves in me and started bashing that brat, so they all ran away. And Chris was backstage with a face like, “Nobody helped me.” I know you were doing it.”
Chappelle then explained what would have happened if Smith had attacked him. “Now I know what Will Smith wouldn’t have done: enjoy the rest of the night.”
