Police raid Detroit business for selling fake Lions merchandise
“Jerseys that retail for $150 to $200 were being sold for $50 to $60,” Woods added. “My client was well aware of the situation.”
Detroit (FOX 2) – A small business owner is speaking out after his store was raided by Detroit police on suspicion of selling counterfeit Lions merchandise.
On Thursday, January 25th, a group of police officers came to the D-Spot on Detroit’s west side and removed all unlicensed Lions equipment.
“They’ve come in here 20 deep,” said store owner Bill Woods. “(Police) saw me posting a Lions jersey on social media. I do not have permission from the NFL to sell Lions apparel.”
Woods said he was caught by police by surprise as he prepared to close the store Thursday night. He was ticketed for violations including advertising before he obtained the necessary license.
“I went through there and took all the sports apparel off the racks, off the display cases…I’ve been in business in the retail industry for six or seven years and I’ve never had this problem,” Woods said. I did. “I have three tickets starting at $1,000 each.”
Mr. Woods insists he has never engaged in any work that defrauded customers.
“Jerseys that retail for $150 to $200 were being sold for $50 to $60,” Woods added. “My customers were well aware of the situation…I had no intention of deceiving, deceiving, or defrauding them. It was nothing like that.”
In addition to his own business, Woods said he is passionate about helping other small business owners. He provides a space for entrepreneurs to sell their products.
“Everything here now is someone else’s design or brand,” he says.
Detroit police released a statement regarding the raid, which read in part:
“DPD understands the desire of individuals and businesses to make the most of our team’s success over the past several months. We need to do so in a responsible way.”
The D-spot reopened this week and Woody is working to improve the situation.
“We know what to do and what not to do in this situation in the future,” he said. “So a situation like this will never happen again.”
