Former Detroit Lions great Herman Moore wasn’t fazed when he left his NFL playing days in 2002 to start a new chapter as a business owner.
The All-Pro receiver wore No. 84 during his time with the Lions after being drafted in 1991 (he stayed there for 11 seasons before signing with the New York Giants). He learned to be an entrepreneur by watching his mother, Mary Moore, work hard and adapt.
“She had me at 21 and worked a lot of jobs,” he told me about his time growing up in Danville, Virginia. “We were a low-income family, living on less than $18,000 a year. But she always made sure my sister and I knew the outcome. ‘You do what you need to do. We lived in government housing and received food stamps, but that’s no excuse for not excelling in life or helping others. ”
Moore didn’t know anything about running a business, so he turned to franchising after he left the playing field.
He did well and owned all the Cinnabon franchises in Michigan and Florida for more than five years in the early 2000s. Around the same time, he owned his own Mail Boxes Etc. franchise in Rochester.
Moore then founded his own company, Team 84 LLC, in 2013 with a focus on development, marketing, and branding. He also founded the Tackle His Life Foundation, which assists young people primarily in Michigan, but also in Virginia, where he grew up, by providing a variety of academic, spiritual, and nutritional programs. Did.
Mr. Moore’s business is not only involved in manufacturing, products and promotion, but also in the development of new technologies. He also helps other minority-owned businesses start up.
Moore is also currently working with former Lions teammate Lomas Brown to sell custom-made blankets for avid NFL fans by two early-era NFL superstars. Herm & Lo was released in October 2023.
I asked Moore a few questions during a big week for the Lions, who play their second postseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday and make an exciting march toward the Super Bowl. Answers have been edited for length and clarity.
Question: Please tell us about your business.
answer: Team 84 is comprised of multiple businesses through partnerships, equity alliances and acquisitions. We do things a little differently and open up opportunities. So what are those businesses? We also undertake contract manufacturing and product development. We provide professional marketing and branding services, primarily focused on influencer brand development. And we’re also moving into content creation, encouraging a new generation of content creators and helping traditional content creators adopt new methods.
I also launched a brand, Herm & Lo, featuring myself and Lomas Brown. I worked with an artist to draw his 32 caricature designs featuring Lomas and me in each of his 32 cities in the NFL. We launched them as blankets and they did very well.
Q: Please tell us about your transition from soccer to business.
answer: I started my business when my playing career was coming to an end. I had a lot of success early on and as I continued to grow, but I also had some failures because I relied too much on information people told me instead of information I actually knew. . Thanks to it, I learned all the major aspects of business and the details needed to become a business owner.
Q: What are your thoughts on the Lions and their season?
a: It’s been an exciting year watching this team and seeing how they continue to improve year after year. It’s fun to watch and listen to their interviews and see the intimacy and heartbeat they seem to have to succeed. When I look back on my career, there’s probably been one or two times where I felt connected to the coaching staff and felt there was a cohesiveness. It was the quality of this Lions team that brought back memories I won’t have for a long time.
