The world’s largest pizza company is offering something new to Anchorage. It’s his marketing stunt that gives his $25,000 grant to the city’s snow removal operations.
“At Domino’s Pizza, we’re clearing unplowed roads across the country, because cold roads shouldn’t get in the way of hot pizza,” says the narrator of the video ad. This story is told while a truck carrying a truck drives down a snowy road. “Nominate your town for Plowing Assistance at PlowingForPizza.com.”
And local Anchorage residents have actually submitted nominations, a company spokesperson said in a “significant” number.
The campaign began after record snowfall in Anchorage in November punctured the city’s snow removal system and closed schools for several days. Alaska’s largest city continued to set records for snowfall in December and January.
“Yes, we are the lucky winners,” Veronica Hoxie said with a laugh.
Hoxie is a spokesperson for Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson. He said the grant agreement was signed last week, but there were other procedural hurdles to clear before the funds could be handed over.
But if that happens, what does that $25,000 snow removal cost look like?
“Overall, it’s not that much,” Hoxie said. “But this is a unique funding mechanism that’s kind of interesting.”
This equates to approximately 900 hours of work for the city’s road maintenance workers.
One condition of accepting the grant is that the city share photos and videos of the business and feature it on the Domino’s Cultivation website.
