Australian Stephanie Gilmore, a record eight-time surfing world champion, will take the 2024 season off, including the Olympics.
“I’m taking this tour season off to rejuvenate myself physically and mentally and enjoy chasing swells and freesurfing in new locations,” her social media post read. “I have some projects and trips that I would like to take on but were not able to happen while traveling during tour season. We are excited for something new this year and look forward to returning to competition in 2025.”
Gilmore, 35, won her eighth world title in 2022, the most ever for a woman, and finished sixth on the World Surf League Tour in 2023.
She is ranked third among Australians behind Tyler Wright and Molly Pickrum, and is eligible for the Olympics as each country can qualify up to two surfers per gender in the 2023 WSL standings. I missed the right to participate.
