The Athens Area Community Foundation’s Empty Stocking Fund donated $66,531.46 to help individuals in need in the community through local nonprofits and churches during the first month of accepting referrals.
The Empty Inventory Fund continues to be an important source of vacation assistance to the Athens area through assistance to families at risk of eviction. Referrals can cover rent, utilities, medical bills, and car payments for families at risk of eviction.
This year, the Empty Stocking Fund received a record number of referrals from local agencies on behalf of families at risk of eviction. Across the Athens region, rising costs of living are increasing affordability burdens for many families. The Athens Welfare Project’s report reflects this reality, finding that 1 in 10 households in the county took out at least one high-interest loan in the past 90 days. What are the most common reasons? Car repair.
According to data from the Athens Welfare Project, 16% of households do not have reliable access to transportation to work or school. While some of these households may not be able to own a car, many who do own a car are still unable to make repairs or car payments and may rely on high-interest loans to cover this cost. There is a gender.
Referrals to funds related to transportation needs include:
- A pregnant mother lost her job and car in the same month.
- A single parent was involved in a car accident and the family’s car was totaled.
- A family whose primary care provider is unable to pay their car payment after being hospitalized for six weeks.
- A school employee who doesn’t own a car and doesn’t live on an active bus route has a hard time finding reliable transportation. and,
- A single father loses his job and faces eviction due to lack of transportation.
Local nonprofits continue to assist individuals in need through the Empty Stocking Fund to help alleviate some of the cost burden, but many families in the county are still experiencing post-holiday financial hardship. I feel the influence of
