During World War I, the Kingdom of Romania sent 91.5 tons of gold coins and ingots to Moscow by rail, along with cultural treasures such as jewelry and art. In this war, Romania fought on the side of Russia, Great Britain, and France against Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.
After the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in 1917, this money was confiscated. In later years, Romania’s efforts to recover the gold were in vain. Some cultural objects were returned by the Soviet authorities in 1935 and 1956, but the money was not.
In 2003, a joint commission was established between Romania and Russia to improve bilateral relations and also address money issues.
On Thursday, the European Parliament passed a resolution proposed by Romanian lawmaker Eugen Tomac, supported by the Romanian National Bank, stipulating that the Russian government return the money.
In a Facebook post, Tomac hailed the vote as a “historic vote” and “a matter of national dignity,” adding: “Romania has no plans to do more than return 91.5 tons of gold and all cultural property.” We cannot and must not accept anything.”
Tomac said Romania had little chance of regaining the gold medal, but “it’s important not to give up.”
There was no immediate comment from Moscow.
