Video: Gas leak causes explosion near day care center
An active gas leak caused two explosions that damaged buildings and injured one person in Washington, DC.
A series of gas explosions destroyed a convenience store and injured one person in Washington on Thursday morning.
D.C. Fire and EMS received a report of an outdoor gas leak in Anacostia’s historic district around 9:30 a.m., and crews arrived on scene a few minutes later, Fire Chief John Donnelly announced. Press conference.
After discovering a gas leak from a broken meter outside one business, crews immediately began evacuating adults and 16 children from a business down the block.

What could be the cause of the gas leak?
Mr Donnelly said he believed the gas leak occurred after the vehicle hit the gas meter during “some normal driving”, but the incident was still under investigation.
When did the explosion occur?
Chief Donnelly said the first explosion occurred about 25 minutes after the first 911 call, breaking windows and starting a flash fire in the two-story building. Additional fire departments were called to help.
A second explosion occurred a few minutes later at the convenience store next door, completely turning the store upside down.

Who was hurt?
One person was injured by flying debris. They were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, Donnelly said.
His current condition is unknown, but no other injuries have been reported. A total of three buildings, including a nursery school and a convenience store, were damaged.
“I think we were very lucky today,” said Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, who was briefed and saw first-hand the damage caused by the gas leak.
“The building where the first explosion occurred has collapsed. There is a day care on the bottom floor of the adjacent building, and we don’t know what the top floor is used for, but the top floor was very heavily damaged. “Bowser said.
“When I saw the building itself, my mouth dropped open. If the children were inside the building, they would definitely have been affected by the explosion,” Bowser said.
Bowser said he was grateful to the firefighters who made the “necessary and quick decision to remove everyone.”
“I want to thank the fire department for their quick and emergency response and evacuating everyone involved. I’m just grateful that everyone is safe,” Bowser said at a news conference.
