Final donation: $475
Final total: $20,401
CHESTER — The final donations for the 2023 Salvation Army and Delaware County Daily Times Merry Christmas were received this week, bringing the final total to $20,401. Even with the withdrawal of $5,000 from nonrecurring corporate contributions, the fund was only 8 percent short of last year’s $26,965 in an environment of inflationary pressures.
The final donors to the fund in 2023 are:
• Anonymous Media, $200
• Richard and Susan Gatchell of Upper Chichester, $100.
• Anonymous Chester, $100
• Chambers Memorial Presbyterian Church in Rutledge, $50.
• Tony Colgan, Blue Mall, $25: In memory of his parents, Joan Colgan and Tom Colgan.
“We are so grateful every time we receive a check because it brings us closer to helping another person and another family,” said Major Kathleen Calvo of the Salvation Army Chester Legion. Told.
This year’s checks from 97 donors enabled us to provide toys and food baskets to 485 families and food to 75 senior households. Donations from the family included more than 2,250 toys and more than 1,500 items of clothing for her.
Mr. Calvo expressed his gratitude to the Corps’ year-round and seasonal volunteers, whom he considered “the army behind the Army.”
“They’re the ones who show up every day. Seasonal volunteers pick up heavy boxes of food and turkeys,” she said.
Among this year’s food donors were St. Luke’s Greek Orthodox Church in Blue Mall, which donated 160 turkeys, and a trucking company donated Cornish chickens for elderly households.
Among the families benefiting this year, Calvo highlighted a mother and her two children who immigrated to the United States because their husband/father was unable to join the family.
“She contacted us and said she wanted winter clothes for her children,” Calbo said. “On top of that, she was also able to provide food and toys, which she really appreciated because she wasn’t expecting that at all.”
Another highlight of the season was assisting families displaced by house fires, providing clothing, toys, food, Christmas trees and decorations.
“My mom called me and said thank you for making Christmas a good memory, because this year is not going to be a good year (for them),” Calvo said. “That’s when we realized we needed the whole community to come together to make things happen. Christmas changed for this family,” she said.
“I’m glad to see it and be a part of it. It’s really a beautiful thing to witness acts of compassion in others,” Calvo said. “People who can help others don’t need to know their name, they just need to know that they are needed. That’s great.”
