Evacuation mode: A fire rescue was carried out on London’s busy upmarket Bond Street on Thursday afternoon after smoke appeared in the basement of jewelery store Chatila, at 22 Old Bond Street, at the southern end of the road leading to Piccadilly.
Three rescue vehicles arrived at the scene and the area was evacuated to prevent damage to nearby shoppers, WWD witnessed.
Nearby retailers including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Moncler temporarily suspended trading as more than a dozen firefighters battled the blaze.
According to an update on London Fire Brigade’s X (formerly Twitter), the accident was caused by an electrical short circuit and no injuries were reported.
Built in the early 20th century, this Grade II listed building has been the venue for Chatila at 22 Old Bond since 1987, and also houses two art galleries and a private equity firm.
A similar situation occurred last year at Tiffany & Co.’s landmark store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The brand confirmed that an electrical fire occurred in the basement of the store before business hours. There was no damage to the store’s interior, expensive jewelry, watches, fine china, gifts, accessories, or other typical items.
