Former county treasurer Lewis Wright has died at the age of 73.
Mr. Wright worked for Hamilton County government for more than 38 years.
He graduated from Tyner High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He became a Certified Public Accountant in his 1977 year and a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1995. He participated in the sport of wrestling during his high school and college years and was a member of the University of Tennessee’s first wrestling team.
He was elected to the Tyner High School Hall of Fame in Chattanooga.
He has been a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants for nearly 30 years, holding multiple positions at the Chattanooga chapter and state level. Within his chapter, he served as secretary, treasurer, vice president, and president. At the state level, he served as Chairman of the TSCPA Board of Directors (2006-2007) and was also a member of the AICPA Board of Trustees.
Mr. Wright is the recipient of the 2004 Government Outstanding CPA Award and is a Gold Associate of the TSCPA Educational Memorial Foundation.
In addition to his leadership of the TSCPA, Mr. Louie served on the City of Chattanooga, Utah Fiscal Advisory Board, the Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for 26 years, and served as Chairman for two years. He was a member of Chattanooga State Technical Community College’s Accounting Technical Advisory Committee and a member of the Tennessee Rural Development Authority appointed by the Lieutenant Governor. He served on his UTK Board of Directors for three years.
He also serves on numerous other organizations including the AICPA, GFOA Executive Committee of the United States and Canada, AGA, AITP (Past Chairman), Public Deposit Security Task Force, Tennessee Bank Collateral Pool Committee, League Central Credit Union, and the U.T. I also worked with National Alumni Association, Chattanooga Area Manager of the Year, March of Dimes, Chattanooga Area Donald McDonald House (past president for 6 years). He served as an honorary life member of the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Walden Club Board of Directors.
Along with his daughters, he is the proud Chief Big Feather of the Cherokee Indian Nation through the Indian Princess Program and will be buried with the broken arrows of his two daughters.
He was an Army veteran and a member of Hixson United Methodist Church since 1993, where he served on the finance committee and parish committee.
A resident of Hixson, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024.
He was the son of the late Ishmael and Janine Wright, and was preceded in death by his daughter, Valerie Lauren Wright, and his grandfather, Earl Ford.
His survivors include his wife of 52 years, Lily “Billy” Wright, two daughters, Julie Wright of Rossville, Ga., Christy Bryden (Sam) of Hixson, four grandchildren; There’s Savannah Wright-Carlson, Luke Wright-Sipe, and Sybil. Hales, Ira Hales, sister Shelly Wright of Chattanooga, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, with Dr. Chuck Starks and Josh Cardwell officiating. Interment will be in the Nativity Garden at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, with Mike Junkins, Mark Junkins, Randy Wright, Lewis Frick, Doug Smith and Tom Martin serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the church Monday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
