Former NATO chief says Ukraine war could end like Korean war

• Retired US Navy Admiral James Stavridis said the Ukraine war could end like the Korean War.
• Stavridis said both Russia and Ukraine were “growing increasingly exhausted by this war.”
• This could lead to the two countries agreeing to negotiations towards the end of 2024, he said.

The end of the Ukraine war could be very similar to the end of the Korean War, where parts of Ukraine remain occupied by Russian forces, says a former top NATO allied commander.

“Ultimately, this will end like the Korean War, with Russia still controlling parts of Ukraine, parts of Crimea, which are the land bridges to Russia.” Retired US Navy Admiral James Stavridis spoke on “Cats Roundtable.” A radio interview aired on Sunday.

“On the other hand, we see Ukraine joining NATO,” Stavridis added.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The long-running conflict has left Russia struggling with crippling Western sanctions and Ukraine relying on Western support for its war effort.

“Both Russia and Ukraine are becoming increasingly exhausted from this war, both in terms of military strength and the economic sanctions imposed on both sides,” Stavridis told radio host John Catsimatidis. “There is,” he said.

“John, when I put everything together, I think there could be an opportunity to negotiate towards the end of this year, perhaps after the U.S. election,” Stavridis said.

In September 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued an executive order stating that peace negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin are “impossible.”

Then, in November 2022, President Zelenskiy announced the “Equation for Peace.” Zelensky’s 10-point peace plan called for the withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of Ukraine’s border with Russia.

Mr Zelensky’s proposal was rejected by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said it would not be used as a basis for negotiations.

Representatives for Mr. Stavridis did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment outside of normal business hours.
