ADELAIDE, Australia — Former world champion cyclist Rohan Dennis has reportedly been charged in connection with the death of his wife, Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins, who died after being hit by a car while riding her bike in Adelaide.
According to Australian media reports, Dennis was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, endangering life and careless driving. He was reportedly released on bail to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.
Hoskins, 32, represented Australia at the London and Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Police said emergency services were called to the Adelaide suburb of Medindi at around 8pm on Saturday after reports a woman had been hit by a car.
Police said the woman, later identified as Ms Hoskins, suffered serious injuries and died after being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Hoskins competed in the track team pursuit event at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and was part of the team that won the world title in the same event in 2015.
“Melissa said winning the team pursuit gold medal at the 2015 World Championships was the highlight of her career, but for the rest of us, the highlight was just having her by our side,” AusCycling said. CEO Marne Fechner said in a statement on Monday.
“Although she retired in 2017, her presence as an alumnus of the sport is felt and appreciated by many in the cycling and equestrian community.”
Hoskins also competed in road cycling for several years with the Australian team GreenEDGE.
Dennis, 33, won two world titles in the road time trial, silver in the team pursuit at the London Olympics and bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo Olympics.
He won the opening time trial in 2015, setting a race record for average speed and becoming the seventh Australian to wear the yellow jersey as race leader at the Tour de France.
Dennis, who has retired from competitive cycling, was named Australian Cyclist of the Year in 2015 and 2018 and won the 2015 Tour Down Under in his hometown of Adelaide. Following Dennis’ retirement and his marriage in 2018, the Dennis family moved to Adelaide from Europe.
Hoskins and Dennis were due to attend a Tour Down Under event in Adelaide this month.
“We are shocked by the news of Melissa Hoskins’ death. Very tragic circumstances that have claimed the loss of a young mother and champion cyclist,” Tour Down Under organizers said in a statement on Monday. “Due to the circumstances, Rohan Dennis will no longer be participating.”
