Florida State University (20-8, 11-5 ACC) defeated Boston University (11-17, 3-12 ACC) by a score of 84-71 tonight in Tallahassee, Florida.
Game overview
Florida State’s Makayla Timpson started the game with a short jumper, but both teams got off to a bit of a slow start. It was just 6-3 midway through the quarter. Both teams looked pretty good, but there were a lot of missed shots. However, once the teams started exchanging baskets, things took a turn for the better. FSU ended the quarter on an 8-1 run, sparked by a jumper by O’Mariah Gordon, giving the Noles a 19-12 lead entering the second quarter.
The second quarter started with both teams exchanging buckets, but midway through the quarter Florida State started to make a move. The Seminoles defeated the Eagles with an 8-2 run that ended with a layup by Tanya Latson. FSU took a 31-18 lead. Kayla Ivey broke up the run with a three-ball, but Latson fought back with five straight points. However, Boston College ended the first half on a 7-2 run, cutting FSU’s lead to 41-30.
In the third quarter, both teams went back and forth. Neither team was able to score much. FSU essentially maintained a double-digit lead throughout the quarter, with the Noles ending the quarter with a 64-52 lead.
Florida State broke away with a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter, starting with a jumper by Latson. The run gave the Noles an 80-58 lead. From there, the Seminoles cruised to an 84-71 victory.
After the match
Tanya Latson led Florida State with 34 points. Makayla Timpson had 16 points and eight boards. O’Mariah Gordon scored 15 points.
Carla Viegas and Sakiya White both missed the game due to illness.
Florida State won by double digits on 7% shooting from deep (not a typo), but lost the rebound battle 46-40. They accomplished that by limiting turnovers and dominating points in the paint (54-34). FSU’s guards (especially Latson) got into the paint at will, which was a big factor in the win.
This was a game Florida State had to win because they couldn’t afford to lose. Boston College has struggled this year. The Eagles lost several impact players to the program and have yet to recover. So this is a Q3 game, which means it won’t help much in winning the restart, but had it gone the other way, it would have been FSU’s worst loss of the season.
With this win, the Seminoles stand to earn a top-four seed in the ACC Tournament and the double-bye that comes with it. They just have to deal with a matchup against a reeling Clemson team that beat Louisville (and lost four in a row). Obviously the Louisville game will be key. The winner of that game will almost certainly become the fourth seed in the conference. This is also his Q1 game, so it’s great for his resume (FSU is 4-6 in his Q1 games). The Noles will take a week off to prepare. Let’s see if they can take advantage of this big opportunity.

Florida State will travel to Louisville next Thursday to take on the Cardinals. The game tips off at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
