For the second year, PennLive recognizes “Trailblazers and Trendsetters,” leaders and advocates in central Pennsylvania who strive to uplift their communities through work, business, the arts, service, and leadership. Celebrating History Month.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be publishing more than 35 profiles of doctors, nurses, gardeners, pastors, educators, entrepreneurs, athletes, philanthropists, restaurateurs, authors, actors, and more. They are nominated by readers, and in most cases are people who have rarely been in the spotlight. More people were nominated than we were able to include. Save those people’s names for future profiles.

jamal jones
community: Harrisburg
Year: 46
His story: As a proud graduate of Harrisburg High School, Jamal Jones said it is important for him to use his education and experience to give back to the community.
He currently serves as a program manager for Harrisburg University’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. His role is to help entrepreneurs start their businesses by providing guidance, advice and coaching.
We also help direct you to resources such as mentoring programs and business loans, and host community events for individuals looking to start their own business.
His journey began with a bachelor’s degree in English composition from Georgetown University, followed by several years as director of youth employment and training programs in Harrisburg.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in English composition from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Jones spent several years in Harrisburg as director of youth employment and training programs.
He was subsequently appointed as the City’s Business Development Director/LERTA Administrator. It was his duty to support the needs of new and existing businesses by addressing job retention and growth, expansion needs, and financial incentives.
He said it has always been his passion to help people in need by helping develop programs that provide them with jobs.
Jones has worn many hats within the community. He was responsible for employment and training programs for youth throughout the south-central Pennsylvania region, while also managing over $1 million in federal workforce development contracts.
He attributes his success to his skills in establishing strategic partnerships and building relationships with key stakeholders. In addition to his accomplishments, he is also his MBA candidate at Louisiana State University.
While Jones is busy with college, he is looking for ways to give back in his work as a board member for the Camp Curtain YMCA and as a member of the advisory board for the Central PA Film Commission.
The City of Harrisburg recognized Mr. Jones as a Catalyst Award recipient from the Harrisburg Regional Chamber and CREDC in 2022 for his work on M&T Bank’s Multicultural Small Business Innovation Lab.
Jones wants to leave a legacy of uplifting all the people he helped achieve his business dreams and the city of Harrisburg in the process. Harrisburg.
In his words: “My parents (James and Amy) are a huge influence in teaching me the importance of being generous with your time and resources to help others. Much of what I do is inspired by them. It’s just to make you proud.”
“Hearing people say ‘thank you’ for the innovative programs and services we provide may not seem like a big deal, but it is so rewarding to me. is.”
