I have something to confess. And what better place to do it than in front of 15,000 of your closest friends and loyal newsletter subscribers? Let’s go. I’m scared of drawing. Rather than painting like watercolor on a manageable 18″ x 24″ canvas. That’s fun. Painting a house is scary. It’s like painting a room. In any room. My boyfriend and I have lived in a cottage downtown for over 6 years now, and the walls are pretty much the same ivory, off-white, and buff colors as when we moved in. I have a dream of brightening up my bathroom. On top of that? — Or you could go bold and decorate one side of your living room.

But I’m afraid to risk ruining it, both literally and figuratively. There are many ideas. I’ve been getting inspiration from many different sources, including Instagram. I stumbled across Carla Elliman’s bright turquoise living room, pictured above, this week. I was so excited to see the before and after photos, other rooms in her house, and all the DIY do’s and don’ts.

As I prepared for next week’s issue, I found even more inspiration when I was editing a Style Specialist article in which she delves into her love of limewash paint. [No, there’s not a link. You’ll have to be patient ’til Thursday.] Christine cites limewash’s softness and calming appeal as part of an overall trend of creating cozy spaces within the home. I’m all about coziness and my small space is nothing short of that. She also claims that lime wash paint “captures today’s design world with its quaint, romantic feel and timeless elegance.” Both are right up my alley. She shares photos like the sunny yellow wall shown above, provided by limewash supplier Sydney Harbor Paint Company. With names like Castaway, Sea Breeze, and Algerian Coral, I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets beachy vibes as I scroll through the site. Yes, I am inspired.

Returning to the topic of paint phobia, I recognize that there are plenty of resources out there. Sites like Apartment Therapy offer many “Room Painting 101” type articles like this one, which detail everything you need to paint a room, including supplies checklists, videos, and how-tos. I am. A little further down on the same page there is an article about how to correct mistakes in drawings, which should make drawing even more reliable, but somehow it intensifies my fear. No big worries though. I’m not in a hurry. For the time being, I plan to keep the walls beige and put lighter colors elsewhere. Local wildflowers should be blooming soon!
Check out the front and back of this week’s issue for tons of news, events, open houses, and information in vibrant color.
