Mr. Welch has been active in the Summit County Republican Party since moving to Hoytsville. He is a precinct president, county delegate, and state central committee representative for the Utah Republican Party.
As a lawmaker, he wants to limit government overreach and taxes and encourage fiscal responsibility. He said rates and regulations impact important issues such as affordable housing.
“One of the things we don’t talk about a lot is the hidden taxes that make housing more expensive,” Welch said. “Whether we’re talking about a developer building hundreds of homes, or just one person building a home or adding on to a home.”
Building permits are one example, he says. Welch recently paid the county $15,000 for a building permit on his property.
Welch says he’s seen this kind of “hidden tax” firsthand since he founded a construction company in 2017 that specializes in excavating public facilities and installing power lines.
He has also worked for Rocky Mountain Power in the past. He deployed to the military twice during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Welch was born in Arizona but grew up in Morgan and graduated from Morgan High School. He traveled around Utah working for Rocky Mountain Power Company and moved to Hoytsville in 2013.
“I am excited about the opportunity to participate in important conversations and represent people across the county, especially in ensuring that the interests and concerns of rural Summit County are represented,” he said. Ta.
Welch has filed to run for Seat A, held by Democrat Roger Armstrong. Welch is the only Republican running for the seat, and he has said he is not interested in a primary battle with other Republicans.
Armstrong will face an internal challenger, LGBTQ+ supporter Cami Richardson. The winner of the Democratic convention will face Welch in the general election on November 5th.
