AMSTERDAM – Seventy percent of Americans admit they see fewer ice cream trucks in their neighborhood these days than they did when they were kids, according to a study by Good Humor Ice Cream Company. Joshua Malatino (aka Sno Cone Joe) is determined to make sure his ice cream truck memories last long into the future.
The NewsChannel 13 team provides reporting on local and national news events, along with the latest weather forecasts and updates from the sports world.
Malatino makes a living by walking around town and offering snacks. He happens to be the owner of his own homegrown Sno Kone Joe Ice Cream franchise, and he knows how to sprinkle some sweet sunshine into your day and work around rocky relationships with his customers.
“I think the important thing is how you treat people and be a good person. You have to treat people with respect and build relationships,” he said.
Because of his attitude, Malatino won a $5,000 prize from Good Humor Ice Cream Company as one of the top winners of the Neighborhood Joy Grant program nationwide.
“All funds are reinvested into the business,” he said. “Part of the $5,000 has already gone towards the upkeep of the vehicle and we hope to get his $20,000.”
If Malatino is selected as the top ice cream truck vendor in the ongoing online contest, he will win $20,000.
“We’re really hoping to get a good following on social media and local news outlets,” he said. “I think people know who I am. I’ve always been a good person.”
