The men’s short program at the World Figure Skating Championships lived up to expectations.
Three of the sport’s most accomplished active men, Japan’s Shoma Uno and Yuma Kagiyama, and America’s Ilia Marin, all performed clean with two quadruple jumps each in Montreal on Thursday. He showed off his skating skills.
Free skate will be broadcast live on Saturday peacock (starting at 6 p.m. ET) and NBC (starting at 8 p.m.).
Uno, the two-time reigning world champion, came first with a program of 107.72 points that included a quad flip, quad toe loop and triple toe combination.

Japan’s Shoma Uno, aiming to defend his world title for the third consecutive year, took first place in the men’s short program at the 2024 World Figure Skating Championships with a score of 107.72.

Olympic silver medalist Kagiyama, who missed last year’s world championships due to injury, trails by just 1.37 points after landing a quad salchow and quad toe-triple toe combo.

After completing the men’s short program at the 2024 World Figure Skating Championships and a routine that included a quadruple Salchow and a quadruple toe/triple toe combo, Yuma Kagiyama trailed his compatriot Shoma Uno by just 1.37 points.
Malin, the world’s top-ranked skater this season, landed a quadruple toe and a quadruple Lutz-triple toe combo, giving her a 1.75 point lead.
He then stated that in the weeks before the World Championships he “suffered a lot of injuries, but there were just a lot of questions in my mind” and that it was a problem with his skate boots heading into January’s U.S. Championships. He said he had nothing to do with it.
“It was pretty tough for me mentally and physically,” Marinin said. “So it was a very difficult time for me to want to skate, but I’m glad I decided to come to this world and give it my all.”
The 19-year-old from Virginia recorded the highest jump score in the event, despite not attempting the quadruple axel, which he is the only one to do so far. He has only attempted the short program once and regularly competes in the free skate at major competitions.
Although scores have gradually increased since the current point system was introduced in 2005, this is the first time that three male athletes have scored 105.90 points or higher in the same short program at an international competition.
Two-time U.S. Olympian Jason Brown was fourth (13.85 points behind), the only athlete to finish in the top seven without hitting a quad.
Fellow American Camden Pulkinen fell on a quadruple toe and finished 17th.
The world championships will continue later Thursday with the pairs free skate at 6:10 p.m. ET. peacock USA Network coverage starts at 8 p.m.
