Several students on campus have used their expertise to create businesses selling their own art. One of these student’s girlfriends has been making waves and you may have seen her work on campus. Look for beautiful, colorful, handcrafted art that’s personalized for everyone who wears it.
The person behind these amazing designs is Megan Billings ’26 (sometimes known around campus as “the chick with the funky earrings”).
Intrigued, I spoke to her to learn more about her business.
what is your business?
“So, I’m a bit of a crafter. I like to crochet things and make things out of recycled bottle tabs, and I also make painted patches for people to sew on their clothes. Masu.”
What is the history behind this craft?
“I literally started as soon as I arrived at Bates. I didn’t know how to crochet before. It was something my mom taught me and [Youtube] In addition to the video, you can also find some patterns on Pinterest. ”
Wait, you didn’t know how to do this until you came to Bates? You’re very good at it!
“I’ve been participating in small talk for a while, but I was one of the few people who didn’t know what I was doing. I sat in the corner with my headphones on, and I was finally able to have a conversation. Multitasking is difficult, or so it was at first, but the advantage now is that you can take it with you everywhere.”
Why did you decide to sell your work?
“Well, I’ve been making things for presents for a while, and people kept telling me to sell my work, but I didn’t want to sell at first. When you put a price on something… But I gave in because I just wanted to do it. And it’s also great in terms of selling my craft.”
What products do you sell?
“So I sell crocheted items, specifically bags (both large and small), computer cases, scarves, shirts, fingerless gloves, earrings, painted patches, etc.”
How can I contact you?
“Through Instagram, I named it Grape Dum Dum, which looks like a lollipop.”
What was the inspiration for your Instagram handle?
“I had a new appreciation for the color purple, and I love grape candy, so I put two and two together. I don’t know if it was kind of random, but that’s the beauty of it.”
What is your favorite part of your experience so far?
“I think people react differently when you give them what they ordered.”

Megan is a truly talented artist who takes her art public. Her business is just one example of how Bates students share their art with other students.
