SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois State Board of Education is looking to help teach computer science in schools, and the state is giving it a boost with a $3 million grant.
The Board of Education on Thursday launched a competitive computer science equity grant aimed at closing the digital divide and helping students learn technology literacy.
As part of an Illinois law signed into law in 2021, all high school students in Illinois are required to have the opportunity to enroll in at least one computer science course that requires literacy skills each grade level.
“Computer science education is fundamental to preparing students to succeed in the 21st century workforce,” said State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders. “Closing the gap in access to high-paying, high-demand technology careers starts with equitable access to computer science and computer literacy education. Students choose to pursue careers in technology. Regardless, computer science education provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven world.”
Computer Science Equity Grant goals include expanding learning opportunities, providing professional development for K-12 teachers, and providing classrooms with the materials needed to teach computer science.
Local education departments, intermediate service centers, state higher education agencies, charter schools, and school districts are all eligible to apply for this grant. Proposals aimed at serving populations underrepresented in the computer science labor market and schools and districts lacking accessible computer science classes will receive priority for funding .
“For too long, students across Illinois have not had equal access to opportunities to prepare for a changing world,” said State Representative Carol Ammons (D-Urbana). “This grant will ensure that school districts develop or strengthen their computer science programs and address systemic inequities by helping to expand opportunities for students in all grades to acquire computer literacy skills. It builds on the progress we’ve made in an equity-driven way.”

Grants range from $10,000 to $330,000 per year.
