1. In the midst of the escalating war in Gaza, Israel has decided to stop funding the Palestinian Authority (PA) by transferring taxes to Norway.
2. Israel collects taxes for the Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the occupied West Bank. A 1990 agreement allows the Israeli government to collect taxes on behalf of the PA and transfer them to the PA with the approval of the Ministry of Finance.
3. “The frozen funds will not be transferred to the Palestinian Authority and will remain in the hands of third parties,” the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Sunday.
4. “Money or its consideration may not be transferred under any circumstances, even through a third party, without the approval of the Israeli Minister of Finance,” the statement added.
5. Israel decided to retain funds allocated to the Gaza Strip after concerns arose that the funds were being used to fund Hamas activities.
6. The incident comes as Israel continues its military operation against Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip, which has left more than 25,000 dead.
7. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his concern over the rising number of civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip, saying denying Palestinians their right to statehood is “unacceptable.” “The denial of statehood to the Palestinian people is unacceptable,” he said.
8. With increasing pressure on Israel due to the increasing number of civilian deaths, the Israel Defense Forces took certain steps to minimize collateral damage. The military recently began distributing leaflets in areas of the Gaza Strip before the operation, warning residents of upcoming attacks and even requesting Israeli help in searching for hostages.

10. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Monday released video footage of a tunnel where Hamas terrorists are said to be holding around 20 hostages at different times.
