James Blake has called on record labels to “fund therapy” for their artists.
The 35-year-old Grammy winner has previously spoken out about his own struggles with mental health and believes the label “trauma profiteering” should cover the cost of healing from trauma. ing.
He wrote that X “should not benefit from the pitfalls of our trauma without helping it.”
James added: “The same goes for live agents and management companies. They all have a vested interest in artists being more successful, but that’s only when they’re thrown into the strange, disconnected world of touring and para-social media. “It means being cut off from your support system, family and friends.”
“To make it clear that labels should fund therapy, we are not proposing that it be provided to licensed therapists.”
The “Retrograde” singer previously spoke about a period in his career when his mental health deteriorated as he tried to maintain a “cool” on-stage persona.
James has struggled with social anxiety in the past, and said he “didn’t have a good time talking” and put pressure on himself to be the “coolest version” of himself “as much as possible.”
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music to mark World Mental Health Day 2021, James said: When the microphone is turned off and he returns home, he has to deal with his own problems, which become more and more epic.
“And that, for me, it’s a matter of producing my music, cool, doing a lot of collaborations, blah, blah, blah, and doing dub, electronic music, good reviews and all that other stuff. It was the difference between that. I was just spiraling…and actually at the time I wasn’t very good at talking, I didn’t really have anything to say, I just had social anxiety. But then I went on stage and was just being the coolest version of myself that I could be.
“And a lot of times you get a financial reward for it. I think it’s Pavlovian. It’s like the more you get a reward, the more you go back to that behavior. I think the answer was to decide that I was okay with not getting a reward and that no matter what part of me was, the kids at school knew I was perfect. I’ve decided to stop pretending like I’m saying I need to look this way to be as perfect as I think I am or I’ll look better… Anything is fine. ”
There was a time when the singer-songwriter was doing “the worst things” for her mental health, including drinking too much alcohol, overeating, and not exercising enough.
Meanwhile, James recently partnered with Vault, a new artist-to-fan platform, to give fans direct access to his music for a $5 monthly subscription.
He also accused platforms like Spotify of taking huge sums of money from artists’ streaming revenue.
