With a fortune of $200 billion, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has once again surpassed Elon Musk to become the richest person in the world.
As of Monday, Bezos’ fortune exceeded Musk’s by $2 billion, according to Bloomberg data. This is the first time Bezos has become the world’s richest person since the fall of 2021.
About 84% of Mr. Bezos’ wealth is owned by Amazon, which was valued at $167 billion as of Monday. Bezos has amassed $23 billion in wealth so far this year, as Amazon’s stock has risen about 15%.
The rest of Bezos’ wealth is held in about $15 billion worth of Blue Origin stock and another $18 billion in cash, according to Bloomberg. Bezos sold $8.5 billion worth of Amazon stock last month.
Mr. Bezos’ increase in wealth coincided with Mr. Musk’s loss caused by the 28% drop in Tesla’s stock price.
Musk has shed $31 billion so far this year, bringing his total net worth to $198 billion as of Monday. On Monday alone, when Tesla’s stock price fell by about 7%, Musk’s wealth decreased by $17 billion.
Musk’s decline in wealth is expected to continue on Tuesday, with Tesla shares falling about 4% on concerns about the electric car maker’s exposure to China’s economic downturn.
Musk’s wealth comes from $77 billion in Tesla stock and $71 billion in SpaceX stock. Other ventures such as X, Neuralink, and The Boring Company complete Musk’s total wealth exposure.
After Bezos and Musk, the world’s richest person is Bernard Arnault, owner of luxury goods company LVMH, with a net worth of $197 billion as of Monday. The top five richest people are Mark Zuckerberg, with a net worth of $179 billion, and Bill Gates, with a net worth of $150 billion.
