BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Berlin’s Kensington Market is closed for business after an early morning fire caused moderate damage to the building.
At 1:39 a.m. today, Berlin Fire Department personnel arrived at Kensington Market, located at 1014 Farmington Street, for a fire. When officials arrived, they saw smoke rising from the back of the building as well as the first floor.
Mutual aid was requested from Cromwell, Rocky Hill, Newington and Wethersfield after the smoking situation turned into a full building fire.
Firefighters entered the building and found the source of the fire at the back of the building. It took firefighters two-and-a-half hours to bring the blaze under control before further damage was caused to the building.
Fire officials said one person had to be evacuated from the second floor of an apartment building adjacent to the market. The person was not injured.
Fire officials said the building sustained moderate damage to the interior and rear. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it appears to have started near the stove.
The market will be closed until cleaning and repairs are completed.
