LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A $1 million Powerball ticket purchased in Henry County, Kentucky has expired after six months without the winner claiming the ticket.
The Kentucky Lottery said in a news release that the unclaimed tickets were sold at the Pilot Travel Center in Pendleton, just off Interstate 71 north of Louisville.
This ticket was sold on July 19, 2023, and the Powerball jackpot was estimated at $1 billion. The winner can claim the prize within her 180 days from the drawing and the expiration date will be his January 15th.
Lottery officials say the ticket officially expired on Monday, but because Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the winner actually won the ticket in downtown Louisville on Friday, Jan. 12. He said he had to take the ticket to the lottery headquarters in Tokyo.
The Kentucky Lottery announced it will now transfer prizes to the Kentucky Unclaimed Prize Fund, designated by lawmakers to provide support for Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarships (KEES).
“Unfortunately, no tickets were charged, but there is finally a silver lining. Furthering our mission to fund college scholarships and grants for Kentucky students and their families We’re giving $1 million back to education,” the Kentucky Lottery said. President Mary Harville said in a news release Monday.
The unclaimed ticket holder matched the first five white balls (7-10-11-13-24), but not the Powerball 24. This earned him a secondary prize of $1 million.
