Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, January 2024 – Aiming to accelerate and scale up agricultural innovation and investment as a key pillar for generating revenue and addressing hunger and poverty on a broader scale, the IsDB, LLF and the Government of Benin have launched an initiative called “Integrated Agricultural Values”. announced the launch of a US$20 million initiative titled “. Chain Development Project (PDI-CVA)”.
His Excellency Gaston Cossi, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries The project was officially launched at a ceremony held in Collins County, Dassa Zume.
The five-year PDI-CVA project will work with local rural communities, agricultural cooperatives, the private sector and other stakeholders to capture national and regional market opportunities for 16,000 communes and 25,000 households.
The project will also reverse Benin’s economic import dependence in the rice and maize sector and sustainably improve the market performance and competitiveness of the maize and rice value chain, thereby increasing rice productivity by an average of 1.5t/ha. The aim is also to increase corn productivity from 3.0 tons/ha to 3.0 tons/ha. 1.5 to 4.5t/ha. These improvements are expected to help approximately 100,000 households overcome poverty, hunger and food insecurity, while also securing more tangible benefits as described below.
- Increase the annual income of beneficiary households from US$300 to US$1,500.
- Create 10,000 new jobs in agricultural and non-agricultural industries.
- Establish 650 hectares of irrigated land with an effective water management system.
- Repair 50 kilometers of access roads.
- Reduce post-harvest losses from 30% to 10%.
The project will work with partner governments and local institutions to train 3,000 farmers, especially women and youth, to meet the information needs of today’s knowledge-intensive agricultural systems.
The Life and Livelihoods Fund and its partners play a key role in transforming agricultural transformation breakthroughs in our member countries into better lives and healthier people. Like all other agricultural development initiatives funded by IsDB and LLF, PDI-CVA is part of a comprehensive approach that links increased agricultural productivity with improved incomes, livelihoods and nutrition in rural areas.
