For many people, the new year brings new goals and aspirations.
Local author and business owner Kelvin Abrams wants to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Perhaps one of your New Year’s resolutions is to become financially independent or start something of your own.
However, the path to entrepreneurship is not so easy.
Abrams uses his experience to help others.
“I own three businesses in Glenelg, Maryland: a coffee shop called K-9 and Coffee, a dog daycare called Tiki’s Playhouse, and a gym,” Abrams said.
The number of Marylanders applying to start a business in 2023 increased by nearly 8% from the previous year.
As more people become their own bosses, Abrams’ new book, Get Uncomfortable or Change Course, will guide you on your entrepreneurial journey.
“You’re an HR person, you’re a therapist, you’re a friend, you’re your boss,” Abrams added.
According to the Chamber of Commerce, approximately 18% of businesses fail within the first year, 50% fail within the first five years, and this plummets further to 65% by the 10th year of business.
Abrams is trying to change the narrative.
“I’ve been through a lot of struggles, a lot of good days and a lot of bad days,” Abrams said. “One of my tenets is to learn, earn, and give back. I’ve learned and earned, and now I want to give back and go back and become a business owner who doesn’t want to make the same mistakes. It’s your turn to help us.” I made it. ”
