HATTIESBURG, Mich. (WDAM) – New Orleans Pelicans fans will notice players wearing new black and green “City Edition” jerseys this season.
And the coat has a “Skeli-can” logo that matches the uniform. Both designs come from the minds of our group here at Pinebelt.
“You can go in a lot of different directions in New Orleans: gritty, fun, colorful, vibrant,” said Ethan Manning, creative director of Rare Design.
The group has worked with several professional teams around the world.
Manning talked about the difference between these Pelicans uniforms and the regular color scheme.
“What’s special about City Edition is that teams can really dive into their own stories, their own locations,” he said.
He and graphic designer Harry Richardson toyed with the idea of an ode to the mystical atmosphere found only in New Orleans.
“This is where the dark waters of the bayou meet New Orleans’ famous groundwater to create something purely Louisiana,” Richardson said.
The Pelicans may be the closest thing to an NBA franchise that people in the Pine Belt can claim as their home team, but Manning understands Rare Design’s position as a local company.
“We’re very happy to be from Hattiesburg,” he said. “We know that Hattiesburg is a very important part of our story as Rare.”
Manning said he wants to inspire others and dispel the perception that creative minds can’t succeed in the South.
“It gives hope to creators here in the South,” Manning said. “There’s a stigma in the South that there aren’t a lot of opportunities to be creative, to be creative. We always try to defend that.”
The team will continue to rotate uniform and court designs for select home games throughout the season.
