CLOOGAN, N.Y. (WWNY) – After 70 years of serving the Croghan community, the owners of Monnat & Nortz Automotive Center are putting the business up for sale.
It’s the end of an era in Krogan Garage, but it’s not what you’d imagine at first glance.
Brothers Pete and Steve Mona still change tires and take care of the interiors of cars.
“Years ago, my father told me that the purpose of running a small business is to serve the public, and that’s what this store has always been proud of,” Steve said.
The brothers have been living essentially in their garage since taking over the company from their father, Gil Mona, and his partner, Howard Notes. It’s on sale now
“We’re already past retirement age. We’re tired. I’d love to try mowing the lawn without headlights someday,” Steve said.
“Thirty years in one place is enough for me. I’m ready to go camping and relax a little. I have no plans to get a job. I’m going to enjoy my retirement,” Pete said.
For many people, Monnat & Nortz is more than just a garage. It is a pillar of the community.
“They did a perfect job and have been an icon in the community for 70-odd years. It’s truly a tradition. It’s sad to see this place go,” customer Bruce Buckingham said.
They may get out of the business, but not far.
“I’m not the type to go to Florida or anything like that. Krogan has always been home and always will be,” Steve said.
However, until it is sold, the Monna family will continue to serve the Croghan community as they have always done.
