The word “bash” fits in a variety of contexts.

A bash is a party or celebration, especially a large one organized by an official organization or attended by celebrities.

A full celebration of the Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund’s 60th anniversary. That’s what the Planning Commission intends for BASH to demonstrate in its invitations and announcements on Friday, February 23, from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

The fun event at the Cynwyd Club will feature refreshments, a silent auction, an art raffle, and a lively program for everyone to enjoy.

And the reason for this celebration is 60 years of providing scholarships to graduates of Harriton and Lower Merion High Schools.

More information is available on the site at lmtsf60.givesmart.com and you can plan to attend the BASH celebration.

LMTSF Chair Katie McGlade said:

“Thanks to your generosity, we were able to award more than $120,000 in grants to 100 of this year’s graduating and renewing students at LMSD.

“We wish all of our scholars the best of luck as they move forward in pursuing their goals.”

Ways to increase the funds available to potential donors each year include participating in and sponsoring a future BASH, creating a dedicated award to honor an individual, hosting an event, or donating directly to LMTSF. And so on.

As an example of a new award, a special award was established in November 2023 by the family and friends of Mrs. Judith Byrd.

Mrs. Byrd (Fishman/nee Bronstein) graduated from Lower Merion High School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

She was a popular fifth grade teacher at Gladwin Elementary School for 35 years.

After teaching in Gladwine, Mrs. Byrd moved to Jupiter, Florida where she enjoyed fine dining and traveling with family and friends.

The first Judy Byrd Memorial Education Scholarship will be awarded in May 2024 to an LMSD graduate planning to pursue a degree in education, with awards to be presented annually thereafter.

Another example of the value of fundraising events is conveyed by the following quote: .

“For 16 years, LMTSF has benefited from this event in maintaining the Dr. Joseph W. Foote Distinguished Award.

“This year was especially special in that it was held in memory of our beloved Lower Merion High School Principal Sean Hughes, who was always at LMHS football games cheering on the Bulldogs!”

The Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund was established in 1964 by a group of community leaders with support from the Lower Merion School District Board of Education.

These residents recognized that residents of Lower Merion vary widely in resources and circumstances, and that access to higher education is essential to the maintenance and growth of the community.

With this in mind, they developed a vision to “help lower Merion and Harriton High School graduates with genuine financial need access higher education affordably.”

As a 501(c)(3) organization, LMTSF relies on the support of the community to fulfill its valuable mission and engages families, alumni, businesses, school activities, and sponsors to help the district’s students succeed. , is seeking donations from neighbors in Lower Merion and Narberth. .

To date, more than 4,60 scholarships have been awarded, totaling $4,500,000.

LMTSF awards grants for post-high school education to graduates based on financial need. This includes funding for college, university, vocational training or technical certifications, or business school for up to four years or eight semesters.

Donations come from district residents, industry, civic and social groups, proceeds from school photos, tribute card sales through HSA, and student and parent fundraising efforts.

As tuition costs rise, the need for financial aid becomes more important. So far, the Lower Merion and Narberth donor community has donated more than $4.5 million to scholars in need since his 1964.

The commitment of the LMTSF Board of Directors and supporters is that no LMSD graduate should be denied access to higher education if they cannot afford it.

LMTSF donors help students pursue their goals so they can acquire skills and develop resources to succeed professionally and financially and benefit the LMSD community and the world .

In addition to LMTSF, other LMSD community partners include A Better Chance, Lower Merion and Harriton Alumni Association, CARE Committee, Lower Merion and Narberth Youth Coalition, Lower Merion Education Foundation, Lower Merion Education Association, and Wellness Council. Masu.

For more information, call 610-645-1893 or visit https://lmtsf.org.

Don’t forget, our generous BASH sponsors and guests help pay for the cost of hosting this special event.

Proceeds will also help “fund the future” of Lower Merion School District scholars with genuine financial need.

Your support means more funds from BASH go directly to post-secondary scholarships. Thank you for paying it forward!

Mary Brown, weekly columnist for Main Line Media News, has sponsored Lower Merion High School’s annual coed football clinic since 2008 and since 2010 as a “memorial” clinic for Joseph W. Dedicated to Dr. Foote. The 2024 clinic will be Sunday morning, May 19th. To register, please send an email: mbrown@sju.edu
