Makeshift cannabis market opens for business

The popular cannabis grower’s showcase has gone, but there are still no fully operational stores where adults can legally purchase the product. Three years later, the process of licensing dealers is starting to move forward, with Newburgh being the closest of the 78 legal facilities.

New Paltz village officials negotiated another concession from state regulators to help farmers get their product to market. Starting March 7, it will once again be possible to pick up some edibles, carts, chillums or pre-rolled joints on Plattekill Street. . Rather than a showcase where various producers can talk to customers about their products, this time around, business will only be conducted by licensed representatives of legacy dispensaries with the authority to exchange cannabis for money.

A visit on March 8 revealed the venue stripped of its previous setup. Inside the garage of a former fire station, a man sits at a card table with a credit card machine and inventory printouts. Only debit cards are accepted and, as before, a photo ID must be scanned first. The employees were friendly and made suggestions based on customer needs. Once the order was paid for, a second employee unlocked the car parked in the back of the garage, removed the items, and presented them in a brown paper bag.

Listed business hours are Thursday and Friday from 4pm to 8pm, Saturday from noon to 6pm, and Sunday from noon to 5pm. This arrangement will last until March unless a pharmacy opens in the village sooner.
