Man who threw himself at judge during sentencing says ‘it was my worst day’

A man who threw himself off a bench to assault a Nevada judge later told officers he was having a “bad day,” according to an arrest report obtained by local NBC affiliate KSNV.

On January 3, video circulating from a Las Vegas courtroom showed 30-year-old Deobra Redden jumping over the judge’s bench and lunging at Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus. Judge Holthus had just indicated that he intended to give Redden prison time for her prior convictions. She was charged with assault with a deadly weapon in April 2023, according to KSNV.

The newspaper said several court officers rushed to help Mr. Holthus and subdue Mr. Redden, who was shouting obscenities. In the scuffle, one officer tripped, dislocated his shoulder and received a cut on his head that required 25 stitches, KSNV reported, citing arrest documents.

In those documents, Holthus told officers that a “large, strong, angry” Redden slammed his head against the wall behind the bench, punched him multiple times, and pulled out his hair. Officers said Redden then silently told police he was “having a bad day and tried to kill the judge,” KSNV reported, citing an arrest report. reported.

Reddin faces a series of new charges following his latest assault, including forceful coercion, extortion, intimidation of a public servant and seven counts of assault on a protected person, according to court records.

Redden is being held in the Clark County Detention Center and is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 9, records show. Holthus, who returned to work the day after the assault, ordered Redden to reappear in court “by someone.” He will take any steps necessary,” local CBS affiliate KLAS reported, citing court documents.
