Monday, March 11, 2024Maple Grove city leaders are bringing back an inclusive, family-friendly event this year to commemorate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st.

Participants at last year’s Rock Your Socks event at the Maple Grove Community Center.
The city will host its second annual Rock Your Socks event on Thursday, March 21 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Maple Grove Community Center. Inside the gym, you’ll find games, food, a bounce house, live music, and musical instruments for kids to try out.
The prize of the game is mismatched and quirky socks. Everyone is encouraged to celebrate by wearing their favorite or mismatched socks.
Why socks can help detect Down syndrome
“Basically, we want to celebrate the whole community and have an inclusive event, but we just want to celebrate people with Down syndrome,” said Crystal Anderson, City of Maple Grove Recreation Supervisor. he said. She explained that the reason for the socks is that advocates claim that the chromosome karyotype of Down syndrome actually looks like mismatched socks.
Recreation Coordinator Luke Kegley also helped organize the event and said many families thanked the staff for organizing the event last year.
“We want everyone to know that we want to host an event that involves everyone and celebrates everyone who is part of our community,” Kegley said.
