Introducing the latest episode of Marie Espie. After graduating from her EHL in 2017, Marie studied for the Master of Science Entrepreneurship, a joint program offered by HEC Paris and Ecole Polytechnique Paris. After she graduated, she worked in different fields such as restaurants, e-commerce, and retail, and then she joined a tourism-related start-up company as her project manager.
born entrepreneur
Marie Espie has entrepreneurial blood in her veins. Her father is also an EHL graduate and runs her own real estate company, and her grandparents are also entrepreneurs. However, Marie’s goal when she arrived at EHL was to eventually work for a major hotel chain or luxury brand. However, her final year course on business development and entrepreneurship started to change her mind, and she found the time she worked as an academic assistant in the school’s entrepreneurship and innovation department particularly inspiring.
It was right there that I said, “Wow, this world is so fun, so dynamic.” I would like to continue to evolve in this field.
What do you love about the entrepreneurial world?
You are at the center of innovation. Always get the latest information. I think that’s very important to me because I’m a very curious person, always learning new things and never getting bored. You can work on many projects at the same time. You can do finance, you can do marketing, you can do operations, you can do customer service. I love working on his 360 degree work.
What did your master do?
The goal of this program is to fully immerse you in the world of entrepreneurs and startups, provide you with all the keys to face this difficult world, and learn the soft and hard skills to successfully complete your project. ”
How does this tie in with your desire to work in hospitality?
I have a real passion for the world of hospitality. For me they are [hospitality and entrepreneurship] are very complementary. When I was at EHL, I thought it would be great to connect the hospitality industry with the innovation and technology industry to offer new services. That’s why I wanted to get a master’s degree – to get a different perspective, new management methods, new tools.
Were there any among your masters that sparked your interest in new directions?
I chose the deep tech option. It was challenging but very interesting as I had the opportunity to work with people involved in hardware, cryptocurrency and machine learning projects. I had to keep up, but last year I learned how to code and started working as a data analyst. I’m really happy that I was able to do that.
You are currently working at a tourism-related startup company. How did your skills and experience lead to this?
For me, this was a great fit because I do project management as well as a lot of data analysis. I create financial forecasts and analysis to support decision-making based on the needs of CEOs and other teams. I also conduct monthly business reviews to support the CEO and track all of our company’s progress and growth. I am very happy to be working in the tourism industry again.
Has the alumni network of EHL, HEC Paris and Ecole Polytechnique Paris helped you in your career so far?
These were very helpful and still are. It’s great to learn about people’s experiences. For me, it was very inspirational and helped me a lot when I faced problems or had doubts. I think building your own projects is very important, but you need support to make the right decisions. Which tools are more efficient and less expensive? Or maybe you have the tools now, but your startup grows and you need other tools. There’s no need to be shy because your community will help you. 80% of the time, they will be happy to answer your questions.
What is your biggest wish for your career right now?
It might be a little cheesy, but I really enjoy every day of it. For me, I think that’s the most important thing. I try to really love what I do.
