Dan O’Neill plans to run the marathon with the goal of raising $5,000 for MassBay’s General Student Scholarship Fund.

Dan O’Neill, a MassBay Community College graduate from Dedham, Massachusetts, will run the 128th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, 2024, with a goal of raising $5,000 for MassBay’s General Student Scholarship Fund. It’s planned. MassBay General Scholarships provide critical funding to students who need assistance paying for tuition, textbooks, and emergency expenses that may occur during the semester.

Having completed the Boston Marathon three times and the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. twice, O’Neal is no stranger to the world of distance running. After running his first Boston Marathon in 2016, he wrote a children’s book, “Big Dan Runs a Marathon,” which chronicled his 42.2-mile journey. Recently, O’Neal shared his own personal story through his poems and short stories, and reflected on his journey to earning an associate’s degree at MassBay University.
“I am excited to run for MassBay because I strongly believe in the community college system and its ability to provide an excellent education to students,” O’Neill said. “Thanks to the education I received at MassBay, I was able to achieve a lot and gain many rewarding professional and personal experiences that would not have been possible otherwise. We look forward to representing our students and raising funds to ensure a clear pathway to their degree.”
O’Neill earned an associate degree in paralegal studies from MassBay College in 2000. Since then, he has served as a valued member of the Massachusetts State Employee, serving in various positions within the Department of Health and Human Services and the State of Massachusetts. Office of the Comptroller as part of the statewide payroll team.

The Town of Wellesley receives an invited entry to the Boston Marathon through the Boston Athletic Association Cities and Towns Program. Entries will be awarded to local charities selected by the Wellesley Select Committee.
