The Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund, established in 1949, has appointed Michelle Arnhold Davis to a five-year term on its board of directors.
Since 2016, Arnhold Davis has been a biology faculty member at Minnesota North College-Itasca in Grand Rapids. An enthusiastic member of the university community, she has served on several faculty search committees and currently serves as co-president of the Faculty Association. She also serves on the boards of the St. Joseph Her Catholic School Board and the Reef Arts Council.
She, along with other Alworth board members and staff, provides $1.2 million in scholarships each year to northern Minnesota students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in math, science, engineering and medical fields of study. New for 2024, the Alworth Scholarship is also available to students currently enrolled at a designated two-year community college and planning to complete their STEM-related education at a four-year university is.
Arnhold Davis, a 1993 graduate of Grand Rapids High School, received an Alworth Scholarship to help fund his studies at the University of Colorado, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. She later received her Ph.D. She received her PhD in neuroscience from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where she studies neural pathways of repetitive stress.
Prior to joining Minnesota North College Itasca, he was a professor of biology in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Superior from 2009 to 2016. She taught human anatomy and physiology, animal physiology, cell biology, and neuroscience. She supervised student research projects and internships. She was co-founder and co-chair of the Undergraduate Research Scholarship and Creative Activities Committee. She served as biology program coordinator. And she served on many departmental and university committees.
“Michelle’s extensive background in science brings additional expertise and perspective to the Alworth Memorial Fund Board, and we feel fortunate to have her join us,” said Patti Phillips, Board Chair. said.

Since 1949, the Alworth Memorial Fund has awarded a total of $55 million in scholarships to more than 5,400 students. The fund will help students at 60 high schools and home-schooled students in his 10 northern Minnesota counties: Aitken, Beltrami, Carleton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Lake, Itasca, Couchiching, and St. Louis. available.
