WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) — A new fund in partnership with Wisconsin Patriot K9 is protecting those who protect our country.
Brad Rothermel founded the Milo Foundation in mid-2023 after the death of his service dog Milo.
Milo was one and a half years old when he died from a rare blood disease. After Milo’s death, Lotermel said she felt the support of the surrounding community.
He decided to repay that kindness and established the Milo Fund to help other veterans deal with the costs of unexpected medical emergencies involving their service dogs.
“It feels like losing one of your comrades in battle, because he (Milo) is there to replace what you lost,” Lotermel said.
According to MetLife Pet Insurance, an emergency visit to the veterinarian can cost between $100 and $50.
“Currently, we have $8,100 (in the fund), which seems like a lot, but I believe Mr. Milos’ total claims were over $8,000. There were several other cases that were over $10,000.” Lani Letaver said. said Wisconsin Patriot K9s Executive Director. “So even if another incident happens, we’re not there yet.”
