View from a drone: A winter wonderland through the snow in the Milwaukee area
Get a bird’s-eye view of the winter wonderland from the snow that piled up around Milwaukee on Thursday.
This Milwaukee elementary school student is now an entrepreneur, and at just 10 years old, he’s already excited about being his own boss.
After the city experienced its first major snowstorm of the season on January 9, fourth-grader TJ Williams approached his mother, Christel Simon, with whom he lives on Milwaukee’s north side, about the idea of starting a snow shoveling business. I pitched it.
“My son came to me one day and said, ‘Mom, how can we make money?'” Simon recalled. “‘Not only can I help you, but I also want to help you buy your own things.'”
Since TJ had experience shoveling snow, he and his family put up flyers promoting affordable sidewalk and driveway snow shoveling services in Milwaukee. Soon, his mother said, he was getting calls from friends, family and even strangers asking him to help clear the snow.
TJ said he calls his business “TJ the Snow Man.”
When asked what he wanted to do first with the money he had earned, he answered, “My mother wants me to fix her car.”
Although the pair aren’t making enough money to repair cars yet, Simon says he’s not discouraged and TJ wants to keep growing the business. In fact, he already has more work lined up this week.

“He always talks about being a businessman and being the boss of his own company,” Simon said. “So I’m very proud of him starting at this young age.”
As he continues to receive more calls, TJ hopes to “hire” other children to help clear the snow. Simon said some of his fourth-grade friends have already expressed interest. She would like to provide her children with more equipment, such as snow shovels, salt and possibly snow blowers, to expand her activities. “I’m so proud of him, it’s unbelievable,” Simon said. “I’m very proud and grateful that he took the initiative to shovel snow and help me.”
