Additionally, Spencer will be part of a new Monson Arts Gallery exhibit opening the same night. The work by Spencer and artist Susannah Sinclair, titled “Defiant,” will be on display at the Monson Arts Gallery until April 21. Monson Arts Gallery is located right next door to Monson Gallery Store, which shares the same building.
Spencer grew up on a horse farm in Piscataquis County. She studied art at the University of Maine and the New Hampshire Museum of Art. Early in Spencer’s painting career, she realized she had the skill to paint portraits and capture more than just a caricature. She focused on her oil painting techniques and different approaches to portraiture. She feels a deep connection to female identity and the different roles women play in society. She is drawn to capturing complex and often difficult subjects and emotions through simple and powerful compositions.
Mr. Spencer has had the honor of painting the official retirement portraits of two Maine judges. Her work is exhibited at her 33 Contemporary Gallery in Chicago. Two of her paintings were recently included in the Lunar Manuscripts, a collection of contemporary artists scheduled to be archived on the moon in 2024.
Spencer lives and works in Dover-Foxcroft.
