The 2024 World Aquatics Championships were unusual in many ways. Since it was held in the first Olympic year in history, the number of absentees from world-famous stars was the highest in history, and this was clearly reflected in the results.
Without many big stars, this paved the way for several swimmers to win medals and even gold medals. Athletes who would be ranked lower in a “normal” championship managed to reach the podium. And the same applies to nations.
More medals were distributed than ever before. Thirty countries won medals, and 18 of them won gold medals, the most ever.
For comparison, the previous record was at the 2009 World Championships, where 25 countries won medals, 17 of which won gold medals.

In common, the 2009 and 2024 World Championships were not typical. The 2009 edition featured high-tech suits and over 40 world records. Obviously the suit affected the results, with some athletes benefiting more from the suit than others, which may have affected the medal standings.
And, as already mentioned, the 2024 World Championships was marked by a large number of absentees.
It is noteworthy that fewer races were held in 2009 than in 2024 due to the mixed relay. Still, if we take the average (dividing the numbers above by the number of events in each championship), the numbers for 2024 will be even higher. The number of medalist countries per event is 0.71 x 0.62. And when converted to gold medalist countries for each event, it is 0.428 x 0.425.
Interestingly, the World Championship with the least variation in medalist countries was the 1975 World Championship, with 11 medalists and 6 gold medalists. In this competition, East Germany and the United States dominated the competition, winning 76% of all events and 62% of medals, leaving few medals for other countries.
