On Saturday in Taipei, Taiwan, Lia Neset and Artem Markelov capped off a perfect season by winning the world junior crown.
A team from Colorado Springs, Colorado won the free dance, finishing more than seven points ahead of the overall standings. The gold medal was Team USA’s third title in the past four years the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships have been held, and 12th overall.
Finishing the 2023-24 season undefeated, Neset and Markelov won six gold medals during the season. They started the year with a victory at the Lake Placid Ice Dance International, then went on to win two Junior Grand Prix and gold medals at the ISU Junior Grand Prix Figure Skating Finals. In January, they became the first athletes to win the U.S. Junior Championship three times before ending the 2023-24 season solidifying their status as the best junior ice dance team in the world.
Neset and Markelov, who skated to Sarah Brightman’s “Anytime Anywhere” and Thomas Bergerson’s “Cry,” performed well in their free dance, with the first three elements all scoring 2 points or higher. I got it. Their performance, which earned them a score of 99.60, included three of his Level 4 elements, including a combination lift, which they scored an impressive 13.78. This is the highest scoring element of the competition.
They finished the competition with a total of 169.76 points and won their first medal at the World Junior Championships.
Eliana Peel and Ethan Peel finished in the top five in their world junior debuts. She scored 92.44 points in the free dance and 154.09 points in the overall.
A performance set to the music of Lord of the Ring On the soundtrack, the sibling duo performed a powerful Level 4 combination lift that earned them just under 13 points.
Jari Pedersen and Jeffrey Chen moved up four places after the free dance, finishing ninth overall with 144.55 points.
Less than a year after teaming up in April 2023, they finished eighth in the free dance with a score of 87.74. Their strongest element came in the middle of the routine, a synchronized twizzle and circular step sequence.
In the men’s competition, Jacob Sanchez finished his World Junior Championship debut with a top-10 finish. He scored 199.17 points overall, including 125.82 points in the free skate.
Daniel Martinov finished his second appearance at the World Junior Championships with a free skate score of 124.14 and a total score of 195.83. He finished 13th overall.
