Future students at St. Clair County Community College will have access to a new endowment fund to help ease the burden of financial concerns related to their education.
The St. Clair County Community Foundation received a donation in February from the estate of the late Tom Andison, a former Marysville resident. A $250,000 gift establishes a new endowment fund through Port His Huron-based foundation.
“The planned gift of $250,000 will create a new endowment fund. His gift will be invested annually in the market. A portion of the funds will be used for scholarships to SC4,” said Foundation Vice President. Jackie Hunton said.
Mr Hunton said more information will be provided in the coming months as to when and how students will be able to access the scholarships.
St. Clair County Community College President Kirk Kramer said students may have to wait to apply because the fund could take several years to generate revenue. He said that applications are not yet available, but the scholarships will be offered on a merit-based basis.
Andison was born in Mayville and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army and taught business at his Vista College in Buena, Iowa. He settled in Marysville and locally worked as a stockbroker, including managing the AG Edwards office where he served for 20 years. He was also active in the First Presbyterian Church of Port Huron. Andison volunteered with the International Symphony Orchestra and the Port Huron Museum. He passed away on April 29, 2023.
Foundation Treasurer Will Oldford said he had known Andison from an early age because his father had a personal and business relationship with him. Although Ms. Andison is not married and she has no children of her own, she is a strong supporter of education and believes that helping young people access education is a top priority. He said that.
St. Clair County Community College students can now apply for scholarships currently available at sc4.academicworks.com and stclairfoundation.org/scholarships.
“The Community Foundation has its own endowment and scholarship donors set up for SC4, and five more will donate. We also partner with our own philanthropic organization, the SC4 Foundation. It’s tied,” Hunton said.
In recent years, the Foundation has evolved its scholarship program and expanded beyond just tuition payments. The foundation aims to support students throughout their college careers and remove any barriers to focusing on their education, including living needs such as food, transportation, and housing.
Hunton said any student enrolled at St. Clair County Community College can request this assistance, as there is no age limit. She said students can seek life support at stclairfoundation.org/scholarships. Overall, the foundation manages more than 300 different endowments to support students, nonprofit organizations, and a variety of focus areas within the community.
Although funds from the Andison Endowment are not yet available to students, the university will host a new event in March that will be available to both students and community members. St. Clair County Community College is celebrating Women’s History Month with a panel discussion on March 20th. The free event will be held at 6 p.m. in the St. Clair County Community College Fine Arts Building, 601 Erie St., Port Huron.
The theme is Women Advocating for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Speakers include:
• Brenda Tenniswood, St. Clair County Regional Educational Services Authority (RESA) Superintendent. Ms. Tenniswood began her service in 2022 as St. Clair County RESA’s first female superintendent.
• Kanchan Wankhede, Director of Entrepreneur Services for the St. Clair County Economic Development Alliance (EDA). She has 25 years of experience working with companies and organizations in the United States, India, Europe and Asia. Ms. Wankhede has also led several diversity initiatives within the organizations she has worked for.
• Dr. Randa Jundi Samman, dentist at Huron Dental in Port Huron since 1994.
• Anita Ashford, Port Huron City Council member and YMCA board member.
“These four women have truly contributed to our community in terms of leadership and community service,” said St. Clair County Community College Senior Vice President Pete Lacey.
