A new year has arrived around the world, and countries around the world are celebrating the start of 2024.
Celebrations were led by Pacific islands, who were the first to see the New Year’s sunrise.

The first place I visited in the new year was Kiribati, a country in the Pacific Ocean.
Kiritimati, the country’s largest island, also known as Christmas Island, entered the year 2024 at 10am UK time.

New Zealand enters 2024
Auckland welcomed the new year with a fireworks display at its tallest building, the Sky Tower.
The tip of the 328-meter (1,076-foot) communications and observation tower glowed in a variety of colors as fireworks exploded into the cloudy night sky.
It was accompanied by laser beams and an animated show.
Australia
Fireworks set off in Sydney as Oz welcomes 2024
Sydney greeted 2024 with a dazzling display of silver and gold fireworks to mark the 50th anniversary of the famous Opera House.
The 12-minute show, accompanied by lasers and fireworks, lit up the sky above Sydney Harbor Bridge.
More than 1 million people, one in five of the city’s residents, watched from beaches and boats.
North Korea, South Korea, and Japan
In Seoul, a countdown ceremony was held at Bosingak by ringing the bell.
North Korea bid farewell to 2023 with a fireworks display in Kim Il Sung Square.
Crowds gathered at a temple in central Tokyo to watch the traditional bell-ringing ceremony known as Joya no Kane.
And in Hiroshima, Japan, a group of people celebrated the New Year with a large torch festival.
Young people carried the torch near Itsukushima Shrine in Hatsukaichi City while a large number of tourists watched.
Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines
Hong Kong hosted its biggest ever event to kick off 2024, with a 12-minute fireworks display from the rooftops of several of the island’s skyscrapers.
In Beijing, China, crowds gathered to watch the New Year’s countdown at Shougang Park.
We welcomed Taiwan in 2024 with fireworks and a countdown from the Taipei 101 building.
Then, fireworks were set off against a backdrop of illuminated skyscrapers, lighting up the night sky over Manila, the capital of the Philippines, just before midnight.
Thailand
Rainbow-colored fireworks were set off over the Chao Phraya River during New Year’s celebrations in Bangkok, Thailand.
India
Celebrations were held in cities across India including New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
Thousands of people from the financial capital of Mumbai flocked to the busy promenade to watch the sun set over the Arabian Sea.
In a less romantic scene, New Delhi’s fireworks sparked fears that the capital, already notorious for poor air quality, could be blanketed in toxic fog on the first morning of the new year.
Pakistan
Celebrations in Pakistan fell silent after the government banned all New Year’s Eve events in solidarity with the Palestinians.
Interim Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar called on Pakistanis to “show solidarity with the oppressed people of Gaza” by starting 2024 simply.
A candlelight demonstration was held in Karachi against Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza.
United Arab Emirates (UAE), Russia, Ukraine
As the clock struck midnight in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, fireworks shot up and down the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi boasts the “world’s largest fireworks display”, with organizers announcing the show lasted 40 minutes.
Russia’s New Year celebrations have been overshadowed by military operations in Ukraine, with the annual fireworks and concerts on Moscow’s Red Square canceled for the second year in a row.
Authorities in several Russian cities have pledged to send funds to the front lines instead.
Despite the cancellation of the celebrations, crowds of Muscovites and tourists still celebrated in the city center.

A dazzling show was held at the ancient Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens.
Meanwhile, fireworks shot into the sky in Cape Town, illuminating the iconic Table Mountain below.

In Berlin, crowds gathered to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Brandenburg Gate, and in Rome, fireworks lit up the city’s sky.
In Paris, acrobats performed before fireworks near the Arc de Triomphe.
London
Around 12,000 fireworks, 600 drones and 430 lights were displayed for about 15 minutes around the London Eye along the River Thames.

The show lived up to the spectacular spectacle this city has become famous for.
The Mayor’s Office is calling it “the biggest fireworks, light and drone show ever to take place over the River Thames”.
It also featured drones painting images in the sky, set to music by the Spice Girls, Beyoncé, Louis Armstrong, The Kinks, Dua Lipa and more.
There was also an audio recording of the King, Dame Helen Mirren, Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley and Baroness Floella Benjamin reading poems by the late Benjamin Zephaniah.

Hogmanay celebrations were in full swing in Scotland’s capital, with people from all over the world flocking to the city and around its iconic castle.

The Princess Garden Street Party and Concert in the Gardens, held to celebrate the festival’s 30th anniversary, attracted thousands of people and was sold out.
Indie band Pulp also performed as part of the festival.
