A 27-year-old New York City investment firm employee died in a tragic skiing accident on a remote slope near a popular resort in Vermont on Tuesday, authorities said.
Brooks Ralph’s body was found by searchers around midnight, five hours after he was reported missing at Stowe Mountain Resort, local officials said.
Stowe police said the man was found in a wooded area in a restricted area.
The young man’s body was taken to the state’s chief medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death, but a preliminary investigation showed his death was an accident, police announced Wednesday.
Ralph lived in Cold Spring, Putnam County, and worked as an associate at Hunter Point Capital, an independent investment firm in the Big Apple.
“The entire team at Hunter Point Capital is devastated by the tragic loss of our colleague and friend Brooks Ralph,” the company said in a statement to the Post. “We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Brooks’ family and loved ones.”
Mr. Ralph graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with degrees in operations research and financial engineering and worked at Barclays Capital, according to his biography on the company’s website.
“As skiers ourselves, we understand the appeal of exploring the backcountry and are deeply saddened by the senseless loss of such a beautiful and adventurous young life,” Stowe Mountain Rescue Team said in a Facebook post. I’m shocked,” he said.
The group involved in Ralph’s discovery has warned skiers that backcountry skiing can be dangerous.
“Multiple hazards exist, from unexpected cliff bands to hidden rocks, potential avalanches and deadly tree wells,” Stowe Mountain Rescue said. “To be honest, there is little that even experienced skiers can do to reduce these risks.”
