Nissan is in extensive talks to invest in electric car maker Fisker, Reuters exclusively reports, potentially giving the struggling startup a financial lifeline.
The deal is expected to close at the end of this month.
Terms under discussion include Nissan investing more than $400 million in Fisker’s truck platform and building Fisker’s planned Alaska pickup truck at one of its U.S. assembly facilities starting in 2026. After announcing on February 29 that it would lay off 15% of its workforce, Fisker claimed it was in talks with major automakers about possible investments and joint development agreements.
Nissan launched the fully battery-powered Leaf hatchback in 2010, pioneering EV technology. But since then, it has been up against more nimble competitors. The partnership with Fisker will allow it to tap into the growing U.S. electric pickup market.
Discussions between Nissan and Fisker are based on a “rebalancing” of Fisker’s relationship with long-time alliance partner Renault. After several months of negotiations, the two companies have agreed to new terms for the Rebalance Alliance. This includes a mutual goal of achieving a 15% cross-shareholding as part of the agreement.
The more constrained partnership removes certain restrictions and allows Nissan to pursue its own growth strategy in areas such as software and electric vehicles. The company’s CEO Henrik Fisker told Reuters it would suspend spending on additional projects until it establishes a strategic partnership.
